California National Guard troops were deployed to the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday, by order of President Donald Trump, to assist in quelling protests against immigrant raids.

The state’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, has called the decision illegal, Reuters reports.

Police continue to make arrests, following dozens of arrests during the first two days of protests, Los Angeles police officers announced at a press conference.

National Guard troops guarded federal government buildings, while police and protesters clashed in separate demonstrations.

Los Angeles police have declared several gatherings as “illegal assemblies,” accusing some protesters of throwing concrete projectiles, bottles, and other objects at the police.
