California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit seeking to block President Donald Trump’s order deploying the National Guard to enforce order in the state following unrest in Los Angeles.

Newsom’s move comes after President Trump ordered the deployment of approximately 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to Los Angeles.

State attorneys, as reported by CNN, have asked a federal judge for an emergency injunction that would temporarily prohibit the Trump administration from using the state’s National Guard members for law enforcement purposes and from assisting federal officials with immigration.

They noted that the requested order “would prevent the use of active-duty National Guard and Marine members for law enforcement purposes.” However, they clarified that they do not seek to prevent National Guard members from protecting the security of federal buildings, other federal government property, or federal personnel within them.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated in the petition that Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, whom California sued yesterday, “intend to unlawfully use federal National Guard soldiers and Marines to accompany federal immigration law enforcement officers on raids throughout Los Angeles.”
