Western Canada is facing a fast-spreading wildfire emergency, with over 17,000 residents forced to evacuate in the province of Manitoba, which has declared a state of emergency due to escalating fire threats.

According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, more than 166 wildfires are currently active across the country. Of these, 84 are considered “out of control”, posing a major threat to communities and infrastructure.

In addition to Manitoba, fires have also affected Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia, putting a strain on firefighting resources nationwide.

To support evacuation and firefighting efforts, Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed on the ground, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announced Wednesday.

Emergency officials warn that strong winds and dry weather conditions could worsen the crisis in the coming days, increasing the risk of further evacuations and property damage.
