Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly set to announce his resignation, although the final decision has not yet been made, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The news comes after The Globe and Mail reported that Trudeau is expected to step down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party after nine years in office. The announcement could come as early as Monday, January 8, 2025.

Reuters’ source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the expected resignation, noting that Trudeau’s departure could leave the party without a leader at a critical juncture. Polls indicate the Liberals may face a heavy defeat in the upcoming elections, slated for late October, against the opposition Conservative Party.

While it is unclear when Trudeau will make the official announcement, The Globe and Mail reported that he may address the party in an urgent meeting with the Liberal parliamentary caucus on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

In recent weeks, an increasing number of Liberal MPs have publicly urged Trudeau to step down following a series of disappointing polls for the party. Some members are said to be alarmed by the party’s declining fortunes, which have sparked growing concerns over their prospects in the upcoming federal elections.

The Prime Minister’s office has not responded to requests for comment outside of regular working hours. According to the posted schedule for Monday, Trudeau is expected to participate in a virtual cabinet meeting focused on Canada-U.S. relations. However, it remains unclear whether he will step down immediately or remain in office until a new Liberal leader is chosen.

Trudeau, who has been at the helm of the Liberal Party since 2015, has faced increasing pressure over his leadership amid a series of political challenges, including economic concerns and party infighting. His resignation, if confirmed, would mark a significant moment in Canadian politics, as the country heads toward a potentially transformative election in the fall.
