Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that he would uphold former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he entered Canada, in compliance with the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant.
Carney made the statement during an interview with Mishal Husain on The Mishal Husain Show broadcast on Bloomberg on Sunday.
When asked directly if he would be prepared to arrest Netanyahu, Carney replied simply: “Yes.”
Support for a Palestinian State
Addressing Canada’s future stance on Palestinian statehood, Carney emphasized:
“The ultimate goal is a free and sustainable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with the State of Israel.”
He accused the Netanyahu government of acting against this vision, saying:
“We have seen that the actions of the Netanyahu government were clearly designed to end any possibility of a Palestinian state, in violation of the UN Charter and contrary to Canadian policy of any government since 1947.”
Context: Ceasefire and U.S. Peace Plan
Carney’s comments came following the latest ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, brokered under the conditions of U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
The statement marks a significant shift in Canada’s foreign policy tone, positioning Carney as one of the few Western leaders willing to publicly support the ICC warrant and confront the Israeli government over alleged violations of international law.
