During the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, the car of a prosecutor from the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Subotica was set on fire. The prosecutor had recently interrogated suspects involved in the attack on Subotica activist Dražen Lončar (47), reports Nova.rs.
Further details regarding the arson have not yet been disclosed.
Background on the Attack
Dražen Lončar was assaulted on November 28, in front of the entrance to his building, sustaining severe injuries and was hospitalized. Social media circulated footage showing a group of masked men beating Lončar with metal rods while he lay on the ground.
Lončar’s brother, Nemanja, described the injuries at the time:
“He has severe bodily injuries. His arm is broken, ribs fractured, and he sustained head injuries.”
Arrests and Investigation
Subotica police arrested several suspects in connection with the assault: P. B. (21), A. G. (19), L. B. (18), and M. M. (24), on suspicion of committing aggravated bodily harm. They are accused of attacking Lončar alongside I. V. K. (18) and a 17-year-old minor, both also taken into custody.
During searches of the suspects’ residences, police found approximately 1 kilogram of marijuana, two scales, and about 1,000 rounds of ammunition. Criminal charges are expected for unauthorized production and distribution of drugs and illegal possession and trafficking of weapons and explosives.
The attack on the prosecutor’s vehicle underscores escalating threats against law enforcement officials involved in sensitive cases in Serbia.
