Kyryl Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, GUR, believes a ceasefire in the war with Russia could happen this year.

“I think it will happen. The majority of the components suggest it will happen,” said Budanov in an interview with journalist Eynulla Fatullayev, according to news agency Reuters.

He did not provide further details. Ukrainian officials mostly oppose the idea of a ceasefire, warning that such a move would only give Russia time to rearm and prepare for further aggression.

“How long it will last, how effective it will be, that’s another matter,” Budanov added.

Discussions about a potential ceasefire intensified after President Donald Trump’s return to the White House for a second term. He has promised to end the war quickly.
