The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest health insurance companies in the U.S., was shot in the chest in downtown Manhattan.

According to foreign media reports, citing individuals familiar with the investigations, the shooting appears to have been a targeted attack.

Thompson, 50, was shot just after 6:45 AM local time, according to police reports, on 6th Avenue, near the New York Hilton Midtown hotel.

He was later rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital in critical condition but unfortunately could not survive.
