Due to a “routing error,” Geneva Airport redirected many passengers through security checks again on Sunday.
Large crowds formed at Cointrin Airport as “several hundred departing passengers” were required to leave the restricted area to go through security once more, said Ignace Jeannerat, spokesperson for Geneva Airport. The reason: a passenger routing error on a flight from Marrakech, reports 20min.ch via IndeksOnline.
After landing at 13:05, passengers on board found themselves back in the departures area, mixing with other travelers. “In order to maintain a high level of security, it was decided that departing passengers be re-screened,” explained the communications officer. The evacuation decision was made at 13:50. Security checks resumed around 14:45.
The operation caused delays of up to two hours for five or six flights. Cancellations were not ruled out. However, by 16:30, no flights had been canceled.
The airport platform urges passengers to consult its app to check the status of their flights. Approximately 50,000 passengers were expected at Cointrin that Sunday.
