The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, site of the world’s worst civilian nuclear disaster, lost all electricity from external sources following extensive military activities on Tuesday morning, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on X.
According to the IAEA, several Ukrainian electrical substations crucial for nuclear safety were affected by the military activities. Additionally, power lines to other nuclear plants were also damaged, raising concerns about operational security, Reuters reports.
Meanwhile, Russia launched a combined drone and missile strike on Ukraine early Tuesday, disrupting electricity and heating supplies to thousands of buildings in Kyiv, amid extremely low temperatures, Ukrainian officials confirmed.
The IAEA stressed the critical importance of restoring power to nuclear facilities to prevent potential safety hazards.
