China has warned that it will protect its national interests after the United States expanded sanctions targeting Iran, amid escalating tensions over Tehran’s energy exports and financial networks.
Beijing criticized Washington’s latest sanctions, saying the measures undermine normal international trade and harm the legitimate interests of Chinese companies.
A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing “firmly opposes” unilateral sanctions imposed outside the framework of international law and called on the United States to stop what it described as “long-arm jurisdiction.”
The warning comes after the US announced a new round of sanctions targeting entities and individuals accused of facilitating Iran’s oil exports and financial transactions.
China has remained one of Iran’s largest trading partners and a major buyer of Iranian crude oil, despite years of US sanctions on Tehran.
Beijing said it would take the necessary steps to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of Chinese businesses affected by the new restrictions.
The latest exchange highlights growing friction between Washington and Beijing over sanctions policy, as the US continues to increase pressure on Iran while China maintains economic ties with Tehran.
