Tensions flared significantly outside the Parliament building on Tuesday afternoon as demonstrations reached a boiling point, culminating in an egg-pelting incident targeting high-ranking officials and the arrest of high-profile activist Dritan Goxhaj.

Protestors targeted the official vehicle of Deputy Prime Minister Albana Kociu as it exited the parliament grounds. Video footage from the scene shows demonstrators pelting the vehicle with eggs while law enforcement officers scrambled to form a human barrier, keeping protestors from making direct physical contact with the car.

Escalation and Clashes with Law Enforcement

Following the incident, police forces went into high alert across the perimeter, anticipating further altercations as remaining Members of Parliament prepared to exit the building.

Demonstrators attempted to completely blockade the primary entrance of the Assembly, resulting in direct physical clashes with riot police who moved in to clear the path.

The unrest resulted in several detentions, most notably that of Dritan Goxhaj, who was escorted away by police officers. Law enforcement officials have not yet released an official statement regarding the exact charges or the total number of individuals detained during the multi-hour standoff.

Over a Month of Sustained Anti-Government Protests

The capital has been gripped by 31 consecutive days of massive demonstrations. The protest movement continues to demand the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the dissolution of his cabinet. Today’s incident marks one of the most direct confrontations between civilian demonstrators and top government cabinet members since the wave of daily unrest began.
