The final phase of the trial against former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi is continuing today at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

Following the completion of the first day of closing arguments, the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office announced that prosecutors will require less than two hours to present their remaining arguments outlining the criminal responsibility of the accused. The session will conclude with a final summary statement by Specialist Prosecutor Kimberly West.

Prosecution Seeks 45-Year Sentences

During the first day of closing arguments, Prosecutor West confirmed that the Prosecution is seeking 45-year prison sentences for each defendant, totaling 180 years of imprisonment.

The sentencing request has triggered strong political and public reactions in Kosovo. President Vjosa Osmani stated that any attempt to equate the KLA’s liberation war with crimes committed by Serbian forces undermines trust in justice.

Political Reactions Intensify

The prosecution’s request also drew sharp criticism from the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK). Meanwhile, former Justice Minister Albulena Haxhiu described the prosecution’s demand as an act of injustice.

Next Steps in the Judicial Process

After the prosecution concludes its closing statements, representatives of victims and defense teams will present their final arguments.

The case will then move to the judicial panel for deliberation, which has three months to deliver a verdict, with the possibility of an extension if required.
