Ajvaz Berisha, former commander of the Special Unit under the General Staff of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK), has officially announced his candidacy for Mayor of Drenas.
Berisha will run under the banner of his own newly established party, “Bashkimi Demokratik” (Democratic Union), offering what he describes as “an alternative for progress” in the municipality.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday, Berisha emphasized his commitment to change and development for Drenas, a region with deep ties to Kosovo’s wartime legacy and post-war political evolution.
Berisha’s entry marks the third announced candidacy in the past two days for the Drenas mayoral race.
On Monday, two members of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) current mayor Ramiz Lladrovci and former MP candidate Petrit Hajdari also declared their intentions to run. However, only one will ultimately be nominated by PDK as its official candidate.
