On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the historic visit of seven U.S. senators to Kosovo, led by Senator Robert Dole, the “Friends of America” association commemorated the day, recognizing it as one of the most important moments for the people of Kosovo during the period of Serbian repression.
The association’s president, Agim Rexhepi, stated that this visit was the greatest event for Albanians at the time, marking the first sign of freedom.
“This event is monumental for all those who lived through that period, who experienced the systematic violence of the former Yugoslav regime and then Milosevic’s Serbian regime. They know that this visit was the greatest event for our nation. It represented hope, the first information, the first warning from Senator Bob Dole, who said, ‘Freedom is coming, democracy is coming.’ Those words were spoken at the Grand Hotel,” Rexhepi said.
He added that Senator Dole’s visit was not alone, as he was accompanied by six other American senators.
“Along with Senator Dole, six other senators came. This was the first signal, the first warning for the people of Kosovo that we would have support, and freedom was achieved as a result,” he expressed.
