Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have claimed control of Goma, a key city in eastern Congo, marking a major escalation in one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts. The fall of Goma, a strategic hub rich in minerals, could worsen an already dire humanitarian crisis, with over 2 million civilians at risk, reports Reuters.

The conflict stems from long-standing ethnic tensions and regional power struggles. M23, predominantly Tutsi, claims to protect Congolese Tutsis, while critics argue Rwanda seeks economic and political influence. Congo, the U.S., and U.N. experts accuse Rwanda of backing the rebels, a charge Kigali denies.

With hospitals overwhelmed and aid blocked, the crisis is deepening. Analysts warn M23 may not withdraw as in 2012, instead using Goma to control supply routes and strengthen its bargaining power.
