The Subcommittee on Europe within the House Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Congressman Keith Self, held a hearing today titled “Assessing the Challenges Facing NATO”, with a focus on evolving threats to the Alliance and to stability in the Western Balkans.

Chairman Self opened the session by placing special emphasis on the importance of Kosovo’s security and democratic progress, as well as the urgent need to counter the harmful influence of Russia and China in the region.

He also expressed concern over destabilizing activities originating from Serbia and Republika Srpska—developments that are drawing increasing attention from U.S. and NATO officials, according to KosovaPress.

Retired Admiral Mark Montgomery described Serbia and Republika Srpska as dangerous actors undermining stability in the Balkans.

Other expert witnesses included Nile Gardiner and Ambassador Julianne Smith, who both offered insights into the strategic importance of the Balkans for NATO’s long-term unity and security.

The organization Albanians for America (AFA) was present at the hearing and continues to advocate for stronger U.S. engagement in support of freedom, democratic values, and the rule of law throughout the Balkans.

AFA praised the commitment of leaders like Congressman Keith Self for putting Kosovo and regional issues at the forefront of global attention at a critical moment for the region.

In light of the threats identified during the hearing, AFA calls on the United States and NATO allies to accelerate efforts toward Kosovo’s full integration into the Alliance. As a dedicated partner to Euro-Atlantic values, Kosovo’s inclusion would strengthen NATO’s southeastern flank and contribute to long-term regional security.
