Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, has broken the record for the longest speech known as the “magic minute,” delivering a speech lasting 8 hours and 45 minutes, reports Rks News.
He surpassed the previous record set by Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy in 2021.
During his lengthy speech, Jeffries criticized the spending and tax law, discussed amendments proposed by Democrats, shared memories from his childhood and his parents, and quoted verses from the Bible.
This extended speech delayed the vote on President Donald Trump’s major legislative bill, demonstrating a political strategy to influence the legislative process in Congress.
