A controversy has erupted over a geography textbook in North Macedonia after the region of Dukagjin in Kosovo was incorrectly labeled as “Metohia”, a term considered historically and politically sensitive.

The issue was highlighted by analyst Nafie Selmani, who shared photos of the textbook page on social media, drawing attention to what she described as a serious error.

In a live interview with Euronews Albania, Selmani called the inclusion of the term “Metohia” a scandal and a grave mistake:

“This concerns a 7th-grade geography textbook published in August 2025. The region of Dukagjin is referred to as Metohia, which is a serious historical and identity-related error. This cannot be considered a mere oversight, as the textbook passed all required legal and educational filters in North Macedonia.”

The incident has sparked concern among parents and educators, with critics warning that such misrepresentations in official educational materials could distort historical and geographical understanding and affect the identity awareness of students.

At present, North Macedonian authorities have not issued an official response regarding the controversy.
