European Council President António Costa affirmed that the future of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova is unequivocally within the European Union. He emphasized that the time has come for the EU to fulfill its promises to these nations.

Key Points from Costa’s Address

Speaking to Members of the European Parliament, Costa underlined that EU enlargement is the bloc’s most significant geopolitical investment for peace and security across Europe.

“We are fully committed to enlargement as the greatest geopolitical investment in peace and security for our people and continent,” Costa stated.

He pointed out that this commitment was a central theme during the December 19 summit and the Western Balkans summit held a day earlier, which he chaired.

A Call to Action

Costa highlighted the efforts of six Western Balkan nations, Ukraine, and Moldova in meeting their commitments toward EU integration.

“There is no doubt that the future of these countries is within our Union. It’s time for us to deliver on our promises, just as they fulfill theirs,” he declared.

Enlargement as a Priority

Since assuming office, Costa has prioritized EU enlargement, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to integrating the Western Balkans and supporting nations striving for membership.

His vision aligns with a broader agenda that includes addressing global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and financial reforms while staying committed to sustainable development goals.
