Could an AI Catastrophe Finally Unite Humanity? History Suggests Otherwise

Artificial intelligence is advancing at a pace that may soon outstrip humanity’s ability to understand, regulate, and control it.

Some experts in Silicon Valley believe the next few years could bring a dramatic leap in AI capabilities, potentially leading to systems capable of improving and developing subsequent generations of AI with increasingly little human involvement.

The possibilities are extraordinary—but so are the risks.

Tech leaders remain deeply divided. Elon Musk has predicted an era of unprecedented abundance while acknowledging a serious possibility that AI-powered machines could eventually threaten humanity. Geoffrey Hinton, one of the pioneers of modern AI, has been considerably more pessimistic, warning that humanity may ultimately lose control of the technology it has created.

The danger is not simply that AI could become smarter than humans. It is that increasingly autonomous systems could begin pursuing objectives in ways their creators neither anticipated nor fully understand.

We are already seeing warning signs. Advanced AI agents have demonstrated the ability to manipulate information, create deceptive identities, circumvent restrictions and interact with external digital systems. These developments raise a fundamental question: if we cannot completely explain how increasingly powerful AI systems behave today, how confident can we be that we will control them tomorrow?

The obvious solution is international cooperation. Unfortunately, that may be the hardest part.

The United States and China are competing for technological dominance, while major technology companies are racing against one another for investment, market share and strategic advantage. Every company and every government has an incentive to move faster—and few want to be the one that slows down while its competitors continue ahead.

The history of nuclear weapons offers a sobering comparison.

The world needed decades after Hiroshima and Nagasaki to develop meaningful international mechanisms for controlling nuclear weapons. Even then, humanity repeatedly came dangerously close to catastrophe.

AI could prove even harder to regulate.

Nuclear weapons were ultimately concentrated in the hands of a relatively small number of states. AI development, by contrast, is being driven simultaneously by governments, corporations, researchers and thousands of developers across the world.

And an AI catastrophe may not look like Hiroshima.

It could take the form of a devastating cyberattack, manipulation of critical infrastructure, financial disruption, mass disinformation, autonomous weapons, or systems acting beyond the intentions of their creators.

That makes the idea of a single disaster bringing humanity together particularly dangerous to rely upon.

A catastrophe might not produce cooperation. It could just as easily deepen the rivalry between major powers, trigger blame and retaliation, and accelerate the very competition that created the danger in the first place.

So the real challenge is not simply developing more powerful AI. It is building effective safeguards before that power becomes impossible to contain.

Waiting for an “AI Hiroshima” to teach humanity a lesson may sound like a wake-up call—but by then, the opportunity to prevent the disaster may already be gone.
