The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an urgent appeal for $8 million in aid as humanitarian groups warn of a worsening crisis in Myanmar following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
Nearly 72 hours after the disaster, Myanmar’s military authorities have confirmed that the death toll has reached 1,700, with hundreds of people still missing.
In addition to the earthquake’s aftermath, the military has intensified airstrikes against armed resistance groups, which have been fighting the military regime for four years.
The powerful tremors were also felt in neighboring countries, including Thailand, where the death toll has risen to 18.
In Bangkok, rescue teams are working tirelessly to free 76 construction workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.
Families of the victims are anxiously waiting for news of their loved ones still trapped. One woman told the BBC, “I will wait as long as it takes.”
This earthquake has triggered a deep humanitarian crisis, and calls for assistance continue to grow. International organizations and local authorities are working to provide the necessary aid, but the situation remains extremely dire.
