The Croatian Parliament voted today on the proposal to recognize Palestine, but the motion failed to secure the required majority.

Out of 121 MPs who voted, 44 were in favor, 4 abstained, and 73 voted against, Croatian media reported.

During the vote, a pro-Palestinian protest took place outside the Parliament.

At the same time, 56 MPs sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, urging Croatia to recognize Palestine as soon as possible and to suspend arms exports to Israel due to what they described as the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

The letter emphasized that recognition would carry strong symbolic value and demonstrate Croatia’s commitment to the two-state solution, which the international community has long regarded as the key to lasting peace in the Middle East.

Milanović in Favor, Government Opposed

President Zoran Milanović stated in New York on Monday that Croatia should recognize Palestine. However, Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman said a day later that the time was not yet right.

“The conditions for recognizing the Palestinian state have not yet been met because the conflicts must end and all hostages must be released,” Grlić Radman told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
