Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called the situation in Gaza “terrible,” but she emphasized that now is not the right moment for the formal recognition of a Palestinian state. Her statement comes as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares to recognize Palestine in September.
Frederiksen stated that Denmark is a supporter of a two-state solution, but that recognition should only occur when a stable and democratic Palestinian state can be established without the influence of Hamas. She added that this step must also include the reciprocal recognition of Israel.
According to the prime minister, recognizing a Palestinian state at this time “will not help the thousands of children who are currently fighting for their survival.” She announced that during its upcoming six-month presidency of the European Union, Denmark will work to increase pressure on both Israel and Hamas.
