Today marks 25 years since the murder of the brothers Ylli, Agron and Mehmet Bytyqi. They were arrested by the Serbian state at the end of June 1999, after they crossed the border by mistake while escorting a Roma family from Prizren to Serbia.

During detention they disappeared and their bodies were later found at a base in Petrovo Selo in Eastern Serbia.

The spokesperson of the US Department of State, Matthew Miller, has reacted to this case.

“25 years ago, American citizens Ylli, Agron and Mehmet Bytyqi were killed in custody by the Serbian police. Today, the perpetrators of this brutal act remain free. We call on Serbia once again to complete its investigation and bring those responsible for their deaths to justice,” the reaction reads.

On the occasion of this anniversary, the president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, wrote.

She has accused Serbia, saying that it continues to glorify war criminals.

“The family of Ylli, Agron, and Mehmet Bytyqi, American citizens brutally murdered 25 years ago, are still seeking justice. To this day, the Serbian regime continues to glorify war criminals, instead of holding them accountable. We will not rest until the perpetrators face justice,” Osmani wrote on the X platform.

The Bytyqi brothers were citizens of the United States of America.

America has continuously accused Serbia that they were executed, shot in the head with their hands tied behind their backs.

The Bytyqi brothers had left the USA where they lived to fight alongside other KLA soldiers.

After the war, they were arrested at the Kosovo-Serbia border and after a few days they were officially released, but from that moment they disappeared.

July 8, 1999 is remembered as the day of their murder.
