Former Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Michael Davenport, has stated that the 2024 attack in Banjska could have been far worse and should serve as a serious warning about ongoing security threats facing Kosovo.
Speaking to Klan Kosova, Davenport emphasized that the incident highlighted the persistent instability and real dangers confronting the country.
“At the time, I was in Kosovo, and I believe the Banjska attack, which could have been much worse, was a wake-up call regarding the insecurity and real threats Kosovo faces,” Davenport said.
He also praised the Kosovo Police for their effective response, noting that their actions helped prevent further escalation. However, he stressed that the attack resulted in tragic consequences, including the death of Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku, which underscored the severity of the incident.
Davenport further pointed out that the Banjska attack was not an isolated case, referencing the attack on the Ibër-Lepenc canal as another example of security challenges. According to him, Kosovo continues to face threats from multiple sources, including actors that are not state entities.
He concluded that greater international support is needed to strengthen Kosovo’s security and stability in the future.
