Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano passed away on Friday at the age of 73. He had been hospitalized for more than three weeks in a private hospital in Tirana in serious condition.
Nano had been admitted to the hospital on October 8 due to chronic respiratory problems. He later suffered cardiac arrest and clinical brain death. His health condition had remained critical and showed no improvement in recent days.
Born on September 16, 1952, Nano was a founding leader of the Socialist Party of Albania and served multiple terms as Prime Minister during the country’s political transition in the 1990s and early 2000s.
His death marks the loss of one of the central figures of Albania’s modern political history and a statesman remembered for his role in shaping the nation’s post-communist path.
