The death toll from flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Istanbul and surrounding areas of Turkey has risen to eight.

According to authorities, six people died in Istanbul and two others in the neighbouring province of Kocaeli. The bodies of the two most recently reported victims were found in Pendik, on the outskirts of Istanbul.

Wednesday’s rainfall was described as the heaviest recorded in Istanbul since meteorological records began in 1942.

Among the victims was a 14-year-old boy who died of electrocution after stepping into a puddle of water.

Authorities have also confirmed that search operations are continuing for one person who remains missing.

In addition to the loss of life, the floods have caused extensive property damage. According to the Governor of Istanbul, nearly 20,000 reports of property damage have been received so far, while emergency teams continue their operations in the affected areas.
