President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani has signed a decree dissolving the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo after it failed to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti has described the decree as unconstitutional, announcing that it will be challenged before the Constitutional Court of Kosovo for review.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have welcomed the president’s decision, but have stated that they will respect whatever ruling the Constitutional Court ultimately delivers regarding the complaints submitted about the presidential election process.

Below is the text of the decree:

The President of the Republic of Kosovo, based on Article 86 (2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, which stipulates that the election of the President of the Republic must take place no later than thirty (30) days before the end of the mandate of the current President, in conjunction with Article 82 (1.3) of the Constitution, and relying on Article 84 (4) of the Constitution, Article 6 of Law No. 03/L-094 on the President of the Republic of Kosovo, and Article 4 (4) of Regulation (P) No. 02/2022 on the Organization and Functioning of the Presidency (30.12.2022), hereby issues the following:

DECREE

The Tenth (X) Legislature of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo is dissolved.

This decree enters into force on the date of its signing.
