Albania’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that the Albanian Air Force (FASh) is playing a pivotal role in the multinational military exercise “Defender Europe 2025”, led by the U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) in collaboration with NATO allies and strategic partners. This year’s edition includes for the first time the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at this operational level.
Landmark UAV Integration and Regional Readiness
According to the ministry’s official statement, “for the first time, a UAV detachment has been integrated into such an exercise,” showcasing the country’s growing capability in modern warfare.
The drills include:
- Helicopter-based search and rescue operations using Cougar and Black Hawk aircraft from Farka Air Base
- Support to ground operations
- MEDEVAC/CASEVAC readiness, highlighting preparedness for both combat and emergency medical evacuations
Joint Efforts Across Borders
The exercises are being conducted partially in Kosovo and involve coordination with civilian institutions like Albcontrol, as well as cooperation with international partners such as the Kosovo Security Force (FSK).
“This exercise marks a significant step in boosting regional security and readiness,” the ministry said, emphasizing multinational collaboration and civil-military integration.
High-Intensity Phases Underway
Launched officially yesterday in Albania, “Defender Europe 2025” runs through June 9, bringing together troops from various NATO countries. In the early hours of Tuesday, Albanian forces moved from Zall-Herr to the Bizë Training Center, where the most intense training phases will unfold.
The exercises include:
