U.S. Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen has sharply criticized the recent decision by the Trump administration to lift sanctions on former Republika Srpska president Milorad Dodik, calling it “irresponsible and premature.”
“The Trump administration’s decision to lift sanctions on Milorad Dodik is irresponsible and premature. Dodik undermined the Dayton Peace Agreement, got close to Putin, and profited from corruption — this cannot be a basis for easing sanctions,” Shaheen wrote on X.
She further added that “the American people deserve an explanation.”
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has reportedly removed Milorad Dodik, Željka Cvijanović (Serb member of Bosnia’s Presidency), Nenad Stevandić (Speaker of the RS National Assembly), and 43 other individuals and entities from the American sanctions list.
The individuals had been accused of undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement and participating in what U.S. officials called “Dodik’s criminal octopus,” a network that allegedly siphoned funds from public enterprises through corrupt procurement schemes.
