A dramatic event unfolded above Italy’s Mount Etna yesterday as Europe’s most active volcano triggered the highest level of aviation alert due to intensified eruptive activity.
According to reports, explosive activity at Etna’s summit craters intensified, producing continuous and dense emissions of volcanic ash into the atmosphere. As a result, scientists issued a red alert from the Volcanic Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA), signaling a potential danger to aircraft operating in the area, the Daily Mail reported.
Rising more than 3,300 meters above sea level, Mount Etna dominates eastern Sicily and is monitored around the clock due to its frequent eruptions and impact on surrounding regions.
Aerial footage captured the moment of the eruption, showing thick ash clouds rising high into the sky, creating scenes reminiscent of Hollywood-style apocalyptic films.
Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation as volcanic ash poses a serious risk to aviation safety, particularly for aircraft engines and visibility.
