Andriy Parubiy, the former Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, was shot dead this afternoon in the western city of Lviv. The Office of the Prosecutor General reported that an armed individual fired multiple shots at him, killing him on the spot.

The assailant fled the scene, and authorities have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.

The Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, described the killing as a security issue in a country still grappling with the Russian invasion, according to Skynews. He emphasized that there is no safe place in Ukraine during this period of conflict. However, officials have not provided details on whether the assassination was directly linked to the ongoing war.

Who was Andriy Parubiy?

Andriy Parubiy, 54, was a key figure during the 2013–2014 protests advocating closer ties with the European Union. He was one of the leaders of the Euromaidan protests that overthrew the pro-Russian former president Viktor Yanukovych. Parubiy served as Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council during the critical period from February to August 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and fighting erupted in eastern Ukraine. He also served as Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament from April 2016 to August 2019.
