Dragan Đilas, president of the Freedom and Justice Party (SSP), stated that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is delaying elections because he knows the majority of citizens are in favor of change. Đilas emphasized that the SSP supports holding both parliamentary and local elections, as well as forming a united front against the current regime.

“Vučić is also aware that there is a huge advantage for those opposing the government in Belgrade, Niš, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Čačak, Užice, Valjevo, Zrenjanin, and all other major cities,” Đilas said during a visit to Kraljevo alongside SSP Presidency member Janko Veselinović.

Đilas further criticized Vučić for sabotaging the election of members of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media and appointing loyalists such as Marko Kričak, Radoslav Repc, and Igor Žmirić to key positions within the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to Đilas, these moves demonstrate Vučić’s intent to increase repression and reveal that he has no genuine plan to bring Serbia closer to the European Union.

“On the contrary, his plan is for Serbia to never become a member of the European Union,” Đilas warned.

Veselinović highlighted that EU membership is particularly important for ordinary citizens, local communities, farmers, entrepreneurs, and infrastructure development. He added that the current government prioritizes its own survival over addressing the needs and welfare of the Serbian people.

This statement underscores a growing criticism that Vučić’s authoritarian practices and manipulation of state institutions are designed to maintain power, even as public opinion favors political renewal and integration with European standards.
