On the final day of talks in Canada, foreign ministers from the seven countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Japan, Canada, and European powers, found themselves at odds over the wording of a joint statement on Russia and the war in Ukraine.
During the meeting, Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Joy expressed that the G7 should support Ukraine against Russia’s aggression.
However, the United States refused to make direct accusations against Moscow, labeling the language used as hostile.
This cautious approach from the U.S. comes at a time when President Trump is trying to broker a ceasefire between the two countries.
While previous joint statements from the G7 condemned Russia’s aggression, the most recent ones reflect a division between the Trump administration and European powers over the shifting responsibility for the war.
