The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, today confirmed that Slovakia has blocked the adoption of the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, leading to significant disappointment within the bloc.
“I am truly saddened that we did not reach an agreement today,” Kallas stated, as reported by The Guardian. “I must say we were very close to appeasing Slovakia. The Commission has offered what they asked for. Now the ball is in Slovakia’s court, and we must close this deal. It has already been two months.”
Kallas reiterated that sanctions are essential to cut off Russia’s financial means to continue the war. She added that the EU would continue to increase the cost for Russian aggression until Moscow has no other option but to halt the conflict.
Furthermore, Kallas also referenced Donald Trump’s statements from last night, expressing that she welcomed the United States’ engagement on the matter.
