Spectacular “lava fountains” erupted from Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano on Tuesday, December 23.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), lava from the southern vent rose up to 420 meters into the air, while lava from the northern vent reached approximately 280 meters.
The event was classified as Episode 39 of the ongoing volcanic activity. The eruption abruptly ended on December 24, after nearly six hours of continuous activity.
During this time, it is estimated that around 10 million cubic meters of lava were expelled.
Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has been experiencing a series of eruptions for approximately one year.
