A drone strike targeted an industrial facility in the Siberian city of Tyumen on Monday evening, marking the first such attack in the city, located more than 1,800 kilometers from Ukraine, according to local authorities.
In a statement on Telegram, regional Russian officials said that three drones were “detected and neutralized” within a company complex in the Antipino district, on the eastern side of Tyumen.
Authorities did not specify the origin of the drones, and Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the strike. Local media reported that a major oil refinery was the intended target.
Emergency services were deployed to the scene to prevent possible explosions, while local outlet MegaTioumen, citing an eyewitness, reported that a cooling structure at the refinery was hit.
The Tyumen region, rich in hydrocarbons, lies more than 1,800 km in a straight line from the Ukrainian border. This is the first drone attack reported in the area since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In recent months, Ukraine has intensified drone strikes on Russian oil refineries in response to Moscow’s large-scale bombardments of Ukrainian territory — operations that have contributed to rising fuel prices.
In June, Ukrainian forces also targeted Russian airbases deep inside Siberia and the Arctic, using long-range drones that penetrated Russian airspace undetected.
