Germany’s Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, stressed that the temporary closure of Munich Airport following drone sightings is a “wake-up call” regarding the threat posed by drones.

Similar drone-related disruptions have been reported at other airports across Europe.

“The battle between the threat from drones and the defense against them is becoming increasingly difficult,” Dobrindt told Bild.

He added that more funding and research are needed to address this issue, both at the national and European levels, The Guardian reported.

Bavaria’s leader, Markus Söder, also joined the calls to strengthen Germany’s air defense. He told Bild that “police must be able to shoot down drones immediately, without delay.”

Söder said the issue will be discussed at Tuesday’s Bavarian cabinet meeting and that a draft law will be fast-tracked to amend current regulations.

“Our infrastructure must function at all times. We must have control over our airspace,” he stated following drone sightings over Munich Airport.
