Recently, the draw for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers placed the Kosovo national team against a notable opponent – Slovakia, a country that still does not recognize Kosovo’s independence. This marks a historic moment for the Dardanians, as it will be the first official FIFA match between Kosovo and Slovakia. Additionally, it is Kosovo’s first time reaching the play-off stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
Slovakia’s national team coach, Francesco Calzona, praised Kosovo’s progress, highlighting their exceptional achievements during the group stage. He mentioned their victories against Sweden and Slovenia, emphasizing that Kosovo is becoming an increasingly strong team.
“Kosovo is a team that is growing in terms of football performance. They have found their path and are following it, now reaping the early rewards. In the World Cup qualifiers, they have beaten Sweden and Slovenia and drawn at home against Switzerland. We need to use our home advantage, although Kosovo remains a tough and strong opponent, even when playing away,” said Calzona.
Meanwhile, Slovak assistant coach Simone Bonomi stressed that Kosovo is undoubtedly a difficult opponent. He praised Kosovo’s team for their significant victories in the World Cup qualifiers, particularly against Sweden and Slovenia, teams Slovakia is well familiar with.
“Kosovo is undoubtedly a tough opponent. In the qualifiers, they have defeated Sweden twice and also won against Slovenia, teams we know well. They have excellent players such as Rrahmani, Muriqi, Vojvoda, and others. For the first time, they are so close to World Cup qualification, which will undoubtedly give their players great motivation. Playing at home can be an advantage for us, and I see the same in case of a possible Play-Off final,” Bonomi stated.
Meanwhile, Slovak striker Ivan Schranz admitted he does not yet know the Kosovo national team well, but hopes to study the squad thoroughly before the decisive match in March.
