žSerbian analyst Dušan Janjić has commented on the ongoing mass anti-government protests in Serbia. According to Janjić, President Aleksandar Vučić has already received warnings from the United Nations and the European Commission regarding the unrest.

“Each victim automatically becomes Vučić’s responsibility, and he knows this,” said Janjić, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

He continued by explaining that Vučić is applying what he called a “closed castle technology,” referring to the state’s attempts to suppress protest movements. “It’s clear that citizen and student protests have paved the way for the masses and have broken the keys to the castle,” Janjić stated. He added that Vučić currently has no clear vision for how to resolve the crisis.

Janjić went further to compare Vučić’s situation to that of the late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. “This resembles a scenario similar to Ceaușescu’s fall (the Romanian dictator who was overthrown and executed in the 1989 revolution). Vučić has placed himself in this situation. When he came to power, he used the crowds and protesters; he held that infamous rally in the square,” Janjić remarked.

He also shared informal estimates that suggest as many as 400,000 to 500,000 people have participated in the protests in Belgrade, signaling widespread discontent with Vučić’s leadership.
