Shortly after midnight, two earthquakes measuring 3.9 and 4.0 on the Richter scale were recorded in southern Albania, according to data published by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremors were felt in several cities across the country, including Elbasan, Berat, and areas surrounding Skrapar.

According to EMSC, the quakes occurred at 00:58 and 00:59, with the epicenter located about 16 kilometers southwest of Çorovoda and 77 kilometers south of Elbasan.

The depth of the tremors was only 2.5 kilometers, classifying them as shallow earthquakes, which are typically felt more strongly at the surface.

The earthquake was recorded approximately 104 kilometers from Tirana, and according to initial reports from citizens on social media, the shaking lasted for a few seconds, causing concern but no material damage or casualties have been reported so far.

“Experts explain that an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 is considered moderate, but it can be clearly felt in buildings, especially when occurring at such a shallow depth. Shallow earthquakes are often perceived as stronger by the population, even if their magnitude is moderate,” reads the technical note from EMSC.
