The European Commission (EC) has requested Montenegro to “fully inform us of its intentions” before making any decisions regarding dual citizenship.

This was stated by the EC spokesperson to Radio Free Europe (RFE), who mentioned that member states set the rules for citizenship while considering European legislation. As a candidate country, Montenegro must refrain from any measures that could threaten its strategic path toward the EU or the security of the EU, including the exercise of prerogatives related to granting citizenship,” he said when asked by RFE whether Brussels would monitor the situation regarding the request for dual citizenship.

It is noted that pro-Russian and pro-Serbian parties dominating the Montenegrin government support signing agreements for dual citizenship with Serbia and other states and amending the Citizenship Law.

Prime Minister Milojko Spajić also backed the initiative, stating that Montenegro should not abandon its “children.” He mentioned that there are about 300,000 cases that this law should “recognize.”

He further elaborated by announcing that the Government, at the initiative of the Parliament, will work on drafting the legislative framework that will establish the dual citizenship system, following the example of EU countries.
