Adolfo Macías Villamar, widely known as “Fito,” one of Ecuador’s most dangerous organized crime figures, has been extradited to the United States. US authorities confirmed the news, stating he now faces serious charges related to drug and arms trafficking.

Fugitive’s Capture and Court Appearance

Villamar, the notorious leader of the Los Choneros gang, was apprehended in June after more than a year on the run. His escape from a maximum-security prison, where he was serving a 34-year sentence for murder and other criminal offenses, had triggered a nationwide manhunt.

According to BBC reports, “Fito” is expected to appear in a US federal court on Monday, where he will enter a plea regarding the charges against him.

Los Choneros’ Reach and Political Implications

The Los Choneros gang, led by Villamar, has strong ties to Mexican cartels and criminal groups from the Balkans, including suspicions of involvement in high-profile political assassinations.

Villamar is also a key suspect in ordering the 2023 assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, an event that sent shockwaves across Ecuador.
