In a fervent appeal to the United Nations, a Serb List delegation today implored Miroslav Jenča, Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas in the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, to take immediate, concrete steps to protect the fundamental human rights and freedoms of Serbs in Kosovo. They urged the UN to exert its authority to demand a return to genuine dialogue, uphold legal certainty, and ensure full respect for UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
A Cry for Justice: “Unacceptable Bridges” and Mounting Pressure
Zlatan Elek, the impassioned President of Serb List, presented Jenča with a litany of “concrete examples” that he said bore witness to the “dramatically difficult position” of the Serb people. His voice carried the weight of “continuous institutional pressures, politically motivated arrests, ethnically motivated attacks, threats to Serbian Orthodox Church property,” and “organized provocations” by Prishtina authorities.
Elek’s plea gained particular urgency as he highlighted the “unacceptable construction of new bridges over the Ibar River without any consultation with the Serb community.” He emphasized that this project, far from being a symbol of integration, is seen by the Serb community as a stark “symbol of division and provocation.” His impassioned words underscored a desperate call for the international community to recognize and address the deep anxieties felt by Serbs in Kosovo.
