The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of Albania, Elisa Spiropali, has publicly expressed her support for the protest scheduled for October 17 at Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, in support of former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) who are in detention in The Hague.
In a statement shared on social media, Spiropali described the protest as a collective act against the injustice, which she says is being done to the Kosovo liberation struggle and its key figures.
“In this century of Albanians, freedom cannot be complete with handcuffs on the liberators. With Thaçi, Veseli, Krasniqi, and Selimi in prison, the national conscience cannot be at peace, and injustice will still have its share in the Albanian’s right,” she emphasized.
Spiropali criticized the approach of the Special Court, calling it a distortion of historical truth and international justice principles:
“The diabolical alchemy of turning yesterday’s heroes of morality and Euro-Atlantic allies into murderers… is more than criminal. It must end as it began, immediately and unconditionally.”
Addressing Albanians everywhere, the minister underlined the importance of the protest as a moment of unity and resistance:
“In Tirana, in Pristina, in Tetovo, and everywhere the Albanian heart beats, we are together in one call and one belief: Freedom has a name! Freedom bears the names of yesterday’s liberators and today’s fighters, who face challenges for much more than personal freedom.”
At the end of her statement, she called on all Albanians to join the Friday protest:
“On Friday, October 17, at Skanderbeg Square. Albanians together for Freedom! For Justice! For Kosovo!”
