Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and former member of President Donald Trump’s administration, has sharply criticized a controversial new tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgrace.”
In a post on social media platform X, Musk wrote:
“I’m sorry, but I can’t stay silent anymore. This outrageous, wasteful congressional bill is a disgusting embarrassment. Shame on those who voted for it. You know you did wrong.”
The bill, proposed by President Trump, aims to cut taxes and reduce government spending, part of a broader effort to reshape federal fiscal policy.
The House of Representatives narrowly passed the legislation last month, with just one vote securing its approval. However, the Congressional Budget Office warned that the bill could add $3.8 trillion to the national debt, which already stands at $36.2 trillion.
Musk echoed that concern, stating:
“This bill will significantly increase the budget deficit and burden American citizens with unsustainable debt.”
The White House dismissed Musk’s criticism, acknowledging his opinion but affirming that work to pass the bill into law would continue.
The Republican-controlled Senate is expected to take up the legislation later this month, though it’s likely to undergo amendments before a final vote.
Musk, who was appointed by Trump to lead a cost-cutting and efficiency task force, had previously intervened in multiple federal agencies. Despite initial optimism, the initiative fell short of major reforms. Musk resigned from his role last week.
