Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the war in Ukraine could be easily ended if the U.S. administration under Donald Trump adopts a solution-based approach.
“We can easily end this war if we see a Trump administration approaching the issue with a solution-based perspective. More dialogue, diplomacy, and agreements will open the door to peace, not weapons, bombs, and conflict,” Erdogan said.
He added in an interview that Western efforts, led by the United States, to end the war in Ukraine would accelerate a resolution to the conflict, according to Reuters.
This statement from Erdogan comes after Trump said during his campaign that he could bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours, but provided few details on how he would aim to end the largest land war in Europe since World War II.
Meanwhile, the administration of President Joe Biden has provided strong support to Ukraine throughout the war in the form of weapons, security assistance, and extensive financial aid. While Biden supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity, condemns Russia’s invasion, and offers military aid, Turkey, a NATO member, has also opposed Western sanctions on Russia, with which it has significant ties in defense, energy, and tourism.
Reportedly, since March, Turkey has called for a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine and has offered to mediate, emphasizing that the negative impact of the conflict on the world needs to be alleviated.
“We are a country that has been able to bring both sides to the same table. We have done it many times before, and we can do it again. This war must end now. We have focused our efforts on peace, and we will continue to do so,” Erdogan said.
