Turkey is ready to help reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Erdogan’s office announced.
According to the statement, Erdogan emphasized that Turkey is willing to assume a mediating role between Iran and the United States with the aim of easing tensions and resolving existing issues.
It was noted that Erdogan and Pezeshkian discussed the “escalation of military tensions in the region,” The Times of Israel reported.
The newspaper added that the phone conversation took place while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Istanbul, holding talks with senior Turkish officials regarding the rising tensions between Iran and the United States.
Meanwhile, a U.S. military destroyer docked at the Israeli port of Eilat, according to the Israeli outlet Ynet, citing the military.
According to the report, the arrival of the destroyer at the southern port on the Gulf of Aqaba, near Israel’s border crossings with Egypt and Jordan, had been planned in advance and is part of ongoing cooperation between the Israeli and U.S. militaries.
The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group entered the Indian Ocean three days ago and continues to move closer to Iran.
