The European Union has reacted following the certification process of political parties for the local elections in Kosovo, expressing disappointment over the non-certification of two Serbian political entities.

“The EU expresses disappointment over the non-certification of two Kosovo Serb political parties. We regret the stance taken by Vetëvendosje during the certification process,” the statement from the EU spokesperson reads.

The statement emphasizes that the inclusive nature of the local elections is crucial for the future relationship between Kosovo and the EU.

“Political parties that have met the legal criteria must be allowed to participate in the elections, and elected representatives must be able to take their seats across Kosovo, based on a free, fair, and inclusive process,” it further states.

The EU urges the responsible institutions to respect Kosovo’s Constitution and laws.

“We expect the responsible institutions to ensure that the entire certification process, including any possible appeals, is conducted fully in line with Kosovo’s Constitution, the Law on General Elections, and the principles of the Rule of Law,” the statement continues.

The declaration highlights that excluding political actors runs contrary to democratic principles.

“Any exclusion of political actors contradicts the fundamental principle of meaningful democratic participation of all communities in the electoral process.”

The EU confirmed it will continue to closely monitor developments.
